What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure aimed at improving the appearance of teeth by applying a gel, which is then activated by lights or lasers (with precautions taken to protect the gums) that breaks down stains on the enamel and dentin, lightening the colour of your natural teeth. Having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients.
Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Teeth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up maybe needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.
Teeth whitening options
We offer take home whitening kits for your convenience. This is the most comfortable and cost effective way to brighten up your smile. We can also do in-chair whitening if results are needed in big hurry, but costs and side effects will usually increase.

In-chair teeth whitening
In-chair teeth whitening requires one or more visits to a dental practice. You’ll be in the dental chair for about an hour while your dentist applies a professional-grade whitening solution to your teeth.
Depending on the type of solution used, your dentist may also use a bright light to maximise results. Following the application of the solution, your dentist will provide directions for avoiding staining your teeth for the following day or two, then offer general advice to help keep your teeth white in the long term.

Take-home teeth whitening
An alternative option to in-chair whitening is a take-home whitening kit that includes custom dental trays and whitening gel. Your dentist will provide instructions for applying your whitening gel to achieve the desired results.
In most cases, it takes longer to achieve results with at-home whitening kits because they are less potent. However, patients often like the convenience of whitening their teeth at home.

Touch-up
1. This type of tooth whitening usually requires two visits. At the first appointment, impressions (moulds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate customized clear plastic trays similar to a mouthguard but thinner.

2. At your second appointment, you will try in the trays, and you will also be given full instructions for use. It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.

Teeth Whitening Instructions
- Brush and floss teeth.
- Place a small drop of gel into the front surface of the tray in the teeth that require bleaching. Use about the size of a peppercorn.
- Make sure the tray is seated fully in the mouth.
- Wipe away excess gel in the mouth with finger.
- Wear 1-3 hours daily- if sensitivity develops, leave out for 1 day. If sensitivity persists contact your dentist. An increase in tooth sensitivity is quite normal during the course of bleaching; this will resolve soon after bleaching has stopped.
- After treatment, remove tray. Rinse tray and mouth with warm water.
- Avoid coloured food and drink during course of bleaching.
- To maintain the new lighter tooth shade, keep your trays and do a single top up treatment approximately once a year after a cleaning visit. You can purchase more bleaching gel at the practice for about $45 per tube.

The effects of teeth whitening will last anywhere from 6 months to 2-3 years. The whitening effects will fade sooner if you smoke, don’t brush and floss often, and consume staining substances such as red wine and coffee.
It will last longer if you minimise these substances and take good care of your oral health.

No. Teeth whitening is a procedure that lightens the enamel of your natural teeth via a gel. This does not affect the colour of dental crowns, veneers, or composite resin (white fillings).
If you wish for a crown, veneer, or fillings to match the colour of your teeth; you will need to discuss this with your dentist as additional work may be required.
Teeth whitening is not recommended for children under the age of 16, those with dental issues such as gum disease or cavities, and anyone who is pregnant.
Your dental professional can help you determine if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening.
